Shine Residence
The Dr. Francis Shine residence is located in the Warren division of Bisbee, Arizona, and was erected in late 1908, designed by Trost & Trost. Dr. Shine was the Superintendent and Chief Surgeon for the Copper Queen Hospital, and this palatial residence reflects his position in the community at the time the home was built. The Bisbee Daily Review from June 16, 1908 (REf: newspapers.com) identifies the home as a frame build and the location as neighboring the Walter Douglas residence. Cochise County Records place the erection date for the house at 1904, probably reflecting the date when the lot was purchased, and also confirms the address of the home as 301 Cole Avenue. The home is a swiss chalet style which is an unusual design for Trost & Trost, however we speculate that the actual design was drawn by a local Trost associate, probably Fred C. Hurst, who had already worked with Trost on the Orpheum Theater.
Trost is identified as the architect via a handwritten notebook entry that is in the private collection of the Trost family, which we have obtained a copy of.
The home stands today and is in excellent condition.
